Five Acres and Room for the RV

Anasazi Builders completed this five bedroom, three bathroom custom home on five acres in Benton County, Washington in 2021. The property is outside city limits, so the water comes from a well we drilled and the waste goes into an engineered septic system. The garage holds two cars plus a tall bay for an RV.

What the family wanted

The owner works in landscaping. He did not want a lot in town with a fence six feet from the kitchen window. He wanted land, and the house was going to go on whatever land he found.

That order matters. When somebody buys a city lot, the utilities are already at the property line and the house is the only real decision. When somebody buys five acres outside city limits, the land itself becomes part of the project.

How the build went

Before we framed anything, the property needed water and it needed a way to handle waste. We drilled the well and we put in an engineered septic system. That is not the exciting part of a build and nobody photographs it, but on acreage it is the part that determines whether there is a house at all.

¿Hubo algo del terreno que complicara el pozo o el séptico? Profundidad, roca, distancia al tendido eléctrico. Si fue limpio, dilo y lo dejamos así.

After that it went the way we expected. This is a design we have built several times, and I recognized it as soon as I opened the file. A plan that families keep choosing is a plan that works, and there is no reason to redraw it from zero when it already does what somebody needs.

The garage is the piece people ask about. Two car spaces and one tall bay for the RV. Not three cars. If you own an RV and you have ever paid to store it somewhere else, you know why that bay is on the plan.

Seven lots were developed in that area and six homes went up on them. We know the ground out there, and we know what it takes to get a house standing on it.
